It’s hard to believe it’s already been a month since the Phunware team returned from the annual HIMSS (Health Information Management Systems Society) conference in Orlando, Florida—the marquee event for the health IT industry. HIMSS spans five days with 300 educational sessions, 1,200 exhibitors and 45,000 attendees from all over the world. It was a lot to take in, but I’d like to share some interesting highlights.

What We Did

Intelligent Health Pavilion

This year, the Phunware booth was set up in the Intelligent Health Pavilion—a 20,000ft2 area packed with live, working demonstrations of the latest technologies for the healthcare ecosystem. In other words, it was the perfect platform to showcase Phunware’s capabilities!

To help all HIMSS attendees navigate the enormous pavilion, Phunware provided the official IH Pavilion wayfinding app, built on our best-in-class technologies. Using Bluetooth beacons for location awareness, the IH Pavilion app routed users to sponsor and vendor kiosks, room tours and theaters—all in real time, using blue dot navigation.

Patient Wayfinding and Beyond

The whole Phunware team was proud to support our Healthcare Director, Robert Tabb, in his presentation at the HIMSS Leadership Theater. Robert outlined how the same location technology that enables wayfinding via mobile app can be used for other business-critical needs like marketing automation, asset tracking / RTLS and workflow optimization. Robert also discussed how the same mobile app platform can integrate with appointment scheduling, EHR and other back-office applications. We had great turnout, with very engaging follow-up questions that showed just how many healthcare organizations are excited about the future of mobile and location tech.

What We Discovered

Across multiple education sessions, we heard other healthcare IT leaders echoing Robert’s presentation: these days, the ideal hospital mobile solution must be able to support a variety of use cases. Optimizing workflow and the staff experience is becoming just as important as patient engagement and satisfaction. So while wayfinding solutions solve a patient need, hospitals want to know that there are other ways to leverage that technology for maximum business benefit and ROI.

We completely agree. Check out our white paper, Found: A Flexible Solution for Hospital Wayfinding and Asset Tracking, to discover just one of the many use cases for mobile location technology.
